What to Expect in a Session

Video analysis:
Why I use video for assessment and instruction:
- So that I can go over what I have seen without the video, catching more subtle elements by using slow motion and frame freeze capacities.
- So that the runner can also get a glimpse at how they are running, which plays a huge role in learning.
- So that I can explain in detail strengths and weaknesses I see and can address those when formulating a treatment/training plan.
- Videos, along with understanding of an individuals learning style, learning speed, and natural abilities will often dictate the sequence of training.
Running Form Correction:
As a general rule I will take you out on the road to video and train, the exception is when you do the bulk of your running indoors. From this I get a general sense of how you are using your body and how forces are operating on the body effecting structure, running form, and specific muscles, ligaments, bones and tendons. I also find actual road training extremely effective when working with runners to improve technique. It allows you time and space to experience how cues and focuses are working for you. I then reinforce changes with continued use of video/visual feedback as well.
In addition to video analysis I continue with physical therapy assessment of strength, muscle balance, flexibility, and symmetry, gathering all the necessary data to best help you get back on the road at whatever level you train at.
If an Injury is in the Acute Stage:
If running is not appropriate because of acute nature of injury, pain intensity, or inability to maintain proper form, I work on pain reduction, muscle activation and balance, relaxation skills, soft tissue mobilization, range of motion exercises, and exercises to enhance the healing process.
Training Suggestions:
I will also assess training volume, intensity, and training and racing goals. And if indicated make appropriate suggestions based on history, current injury situation, and personal needs.
